Three of our five butterflies successfully made it from caterpillar to butterfly. On Friday we took advantage of the sun and released our butterflies outside. Some students had a chance to touch them before they flew off into the garden!
Today I read the book Tops and Bottoms by Janet Stevens. We are ending the school year by reading some folktales and discussing the lessons that some books teach. Today we talked about how folktales are stories that come from different countries or cultures and are told orally before they are written down. They often teach the reader a lesson or explain how something came to be. Tops and Bottoms is a trickster tale. The Hare tricks the lazy bear into getting all of the crops. First agreeing that the Bear will take the tops and the Hare the bottoms...the Hare plants radishes, carrots and potatoes thus leaving the bear with all of the leafy tops. Kindergarten believes that the lesson is to not be lazy and to help one another.
