Run, run, run as fast as you can you can't catch me I'm the Gingerbread Man!

It has been a busy Monday and Tuesday!  Yesterday we finished out fourth sound book in jolly phonics and did a review of the sounds that we learned.  We have been focusing saying words slowly, one sound at a time.  Kindergartners are beginning to use what they know about sounds to blend words!  Today we blended:

cap
dot
at
tap
did
rot
sat
pet

Yesterday we did Gingerbread math!  Students rolled a die and each number corresponded with adding eyes, nose, mouth, buttons, hat, hair, skirt or pants.  Today I read The Gingerbread Girl  and we acted out the story of the Gingerbread Man with masks.

Shapes

This morning we did a fun morning greeting: the "shoe" greeting!  After taking off boots, students put one shoe on and one shoe in the middle of the rug.  Students took turns going up, choosing a shoe, and then greeting the person whose shoe it was.  It was fun and silly.

In Math today I read a book about shapes The Big Box of Shapes by Wiley Blevins and then we talked about what we notice about triangles.  Kindergarten said all triangles have 3 corners, 3 points, 3 sides and straight lines.  Two surprising things were that triangles can be "upside down" and they most be closed.

A Chilly Monday

Today we talked a lot about what to expect at the Pete the Cat performance at the Flynn tomorrow!  We learned that people, actors, are playing the characters so they are going to look a little bit different than the characters in the Pete the Cat books.  I read Pete the Cat Bedtime Blues.

Our sound today was another digraph: oa which makes the sound oh.  Kindergarten helped out writing words that had oa in the middle like goat, boat, moat, soap and coat.  It was tricky that note sounds the same but is written differently.

We also read the December Chicken Soup with Rice poem:

December

In December
I will be
A baubled bangled
Christmas tree
With soup bowls
draped all over me.
Merry once
Merry twice
Merry chicken soup
With rice!

Tuesday in the Trees!

It has been a few weeks since we ventured to the woods but were happy to get back this morning.  We typically find the woods to be much less windy than the playground in the morning.  Students immediately noticed that almost all of the trees were bare.  This led to a later discussion about evergreen trees and how their leaves stay green all year.

In Math today students enjoyed practicing 1 more by playing a 1 more Four in a Row.  Students rolled a die and then had to put a marker on the number or amount that was one more.  The first player to get 4 in a row wins!

Extravaganza!

It was a very busy Monday with the extravangza where students enjoyed shopping for special treasures!  It was such a busy day I didn't get any pictures.  Mrs. Guilmette visited for Guidance and talked more about being a bystander hero, someone who observes someone else being bullied and helps by telling the bully to stop or reporting it to a trusted adult.  This afternoon I read the book Not a Buzz to Be Found: Insects in Winter by Linda Glaser and we talked about what insects do and where they go to survive the cold and icy winter.  Kindergarten was most surprised to learn that many insects have a special antifreeze like substance in their bodies that keep them from freezing throughout the winter.

1 Less

This morning we made Get Well Soon Cards for our Music teacher, Ms. Schwerin.  Unfortunately, Ms. Schwerin was in a car accident before Thanksgiving and will be out of school until after Winter Break.  She has assured us that she is okay but suffered a few fractures and is home with family healing, During Math today we acted out "picking" apples from a tree to practice counting backwards from 10 and identifying the number that is 1 less.

This afternoon we went to the computer lab and learned a new sound ai. This is our first digraph (1 sound - 2 letters).  After PE we also practiced matching words that rhyme and enjoyed some independent reading.

The Snowy Day!

It was a fun morning outside in the snow!  Lots of rolling big balls of snow for snow forts and snow people.  We also spent the morning working on writing and illustrating part of our All About the Woods book.  So far we have finished the cover, the first page: We listen for animals. and the second page: We play in the woods.  It has been a wonderful collaboration so far.

This afternoon I read the Snowy Day and we created some snowy day inspired art using water colors and tissue paper.

Happy Monday!
